Most Derby homeowners think about pre-holiday checks indoors — stopcock, fridge, boiler. The garden gets less attention, and yet it's where most insurance and security problems start. ResiQuote's 2026 home-security commentary, Direct Line's claims data and Aviva's home-insurance guidance all flag the same pattern: opportunist break-ins in the summer holiday window are most often facilitated by side gates that don't lock, sheds full of tools nobody locked away, and external lighting that doesn't switch on. A £160 Derby handyman half-day (Mon-Fri daytime rate, per Kirk Group Handyman's published 2026 pricing) covers the lot. Here is what fits in the slot.
Five jobs that fit a half-day
1. Gate hinges, latches and shed locks (45-60 minutes)
Side gates that don't latch properly or shed doors with a stripped padlock are the two cheapest entry points for an opportunist burglar. We carry the standard hinge re-fit kit, replacement hasps, padbolts and weatherproof padlocks on the van. A 6-foot side gate with sagging hinges is typically a 30-minute re-fix; a new hasp and BS-rated padlock on a shed door is 15-20 minutes.
2. Gutter clear and downpipe check (45-60 minutes)
A blocked gutter that fills with summer rain while you're away routes water down the wrong elevation, into facias, soffits and (worst case) the cavity wall. A pre-holiday gutter clear from a ladder removes the risk. We use a domestic-grade ladder and gutter-cleaning attachment; ridge-pole work and roof access aren't in scope (those need a roofer with proper height equipment).
3. Garden furniture stack and shed inventory (30 minutes)
We stack and secure garden furniture (legs strapped to a fence anchor for wind), put cushions and removable kit in the shed, and run a 5-minute inventory of the shed contents — you get a phone photo of what's inside the shed at lockup time, which is useful for insurance if anything is taken. Power tools, bikes and lawnmowers should sit deepest in the shed (hardest to grab quickly).
4. External lighting timer and dusk sensor (20-40 minutes)
If you have an existing external porch or driveway light, we'll fit a plug-in timer or PIR-sensor adapter so it activates at dusk through your absence. New external light fittings that require a consumer-unit feed are NOT in handyman scope (Part P, Cor's electrician) — we'll flag if a quote is needed.
5. Visible-camera mounting and weatherproofing (30 minutes)
If you've bought an Eufy, Ring or Aqara wall-mount camera, we'll fit it during the same half-day — see our companion blog on the smart-doorbell-lock-camera bundle for the full version of this job. For a simple battery camera fit, 20-30 minutes is enough.
Briefing the handyman the day before
- 5-8 photos of every area to be worked on: gate, shed, gutter, garden furniture location, external lighting fittings
- Specific tasks in priority order: 'gate first, shed lock second, gutter third, then timer, then camera'
- Whether you're supplying materials (locks, timers, camera) or you'd like us to source them
- Confirmation of access (side gate, garage, parking for the van)
- Confirmation of power and water access where needed
- Your flight time and date — we'll work to be done at least 24 hours before you leave so you have time to act on anything we flag
"Most UK burglaries are opportunistic — a weak lock, an open window, or a dark driveway. The good news is that effective security upgrades are some of the cheapest home improvements you can make."
When to bundle with adjacent jobs
Many Derby customers bundle the pre-holiday garden lockup with two adjacent jobs: the smart-doorbell-lock-camera bundle (see our companion blog) and the indoor pre-holiday checklist run by Cor (see cor.kirkgroup.uk/blog). If you're doing all three, ask for a full day rather than a half-day — £220-£320 full day standard rate, and we'll close out the entire pre-holiday checklist in a single visit.
