ECO4 Insulation Booked? Prep Your Loft First

ECO4 Insulation Booked? Prep Your Loft First

ECO4, the government's main home insulation grant scheme, closes on 31 December 2026 — extended, but only to allow what the government itself describes as 'an orderly close to the scheme'. If you've got insulation booked through ECO4, or you're racing to get on an installer's books before the deadline, there's a step a lot of households skip that ends up slowing the actual installation day down: getting the loft ready before the fitter turns up.

Why a cluttered loft costs you time on installation day

Insulation installers are usually booked in tight, back-to-back slots as the December deadline approaches — they don't have spare time built in to move twenty years of stored boxes out of the way before they can even see the joists. A loft that's not ready on the day either means the fitter does a partial job around the clutter, charges extra for the time spent clearing it themselves, or has to come back another day — and 'another day' is the one thing nobody wants to risk with a hard December cut-off.

What we can sort before your fitter arrives

A Kirk Group Handyman loft-prep visit typically covers:

  • Clearing and safely relocating stored boxes, old furniture or general clutter to give the installer clear access to every joist bay
  • Checking and boarding walkway sections if your loft doesn't already have safe access boards
  • Removing any old, degraded existing insulation that needs stripping out before new material goes in
  • Minor repairs to loft hatch fittings or ladders so access is safe and straightforward on the day
  • A general check for anything obviously amiss — damp staining, pest signs, loose felt — worth flagging to your installer before they start

What we leave to the insulation installer and to Cor

We prepare the space — we don't fit the insulation itself, and we don't touch any electrics up there, even something as simple-looking as an old loft light fitting or exposed cabling. Loft spaces often have ageing wiring that hasn't been looked at in years, and that's a job for a qualified electrician, not a handyman working around it. If your loft prep turns up wiring that looks old, exposed or damaged, we'll flag it and point you to Cor rather than working near it ourselves.

"The households that get their ECO4 job done smoothly before December aren't the lucky ones — they're the ones whose loft was ready before the fitter's van pulled up."

Booking before the December rush

As more households race to get insulation booked before the ECO4 deadline, installer diaries are filling from now through December — which means loft-prep slots are worth booking early too, ideally a couple of weeks ahead of your confirmed installation date rather than the day before.
